Editing the genes of human embryos, is now a reality but the largest subject of controversy involving DNA editing advances. On the informational website Bionet, the coined term "designer baby" is described as a common name; scientists do not use this term. It is quite strange to think of a future in which we can choose traits like eye color or IQ levels for our offspring but for now that is up to the review of global discussion and law making. The majority of the world is concerned after China announced they recently attempted to change genes in human embryos, though on defective embryos without real success.
In a Jennifer Doudna (inventor of CRISPR_Cas9) autobiography by the NY Times, it is mentioned that "everyone welcomes CRISPR-Cas9 as a strategy to treat disease; many scientists are worried that it could also be used to alter genes in human embryos, sperm or eggs in a way that can be passed from generation to generation. The prospect raises fears of a dystopian future in which scientists create in elite population of customized children with enhanced intelligence, beauty, or other traits.
In a recent NY Post titled "Unregulated Reality", views shared explaining recent political dilemmas including sex-selection and abortion laws. They state by "understanding the government's difficulty to make decisions on topics like this, it will be harder for them to place restrictions on genetic editing in the future as well".
